Definition: A retail traffic counter is an electronic device with a sensor mounted near
the entrance. Each time a pedestrian passes through the entrance, the sensor will sense
the customer and that customer will be counted. The most tried and true technology is
the infrared beam technology. These are invisible beams that are emitted across the
entrance. The absence or presence of the beams allows the sensor to determine when a
pedestrian has passed through the sensor’s path. Why Count? A store’s sales figures are only half of the equation for success. You must also know the store’s traffic figures to fully understand your business. The cause of decreased sales can only be determined if you know your traffic. You must determine if the cause is internal to your store, such as sales staff competency, pricing and selection or external to your store, such as curb appeal, location and changes in automotive traffic patterns around your store’s geographic area. For example, if you are experiencing decreased sales figures, but your traffic figures are unchanged, then you have an internal problem.
